For more than a decade, I walked in and out of 12-step meetings. The first step always troubled me — we admit we are powerless over alcohol. I knew something wasn’t right with that framing but I wasn’t well enough to understand it. Connections made from the rooms and sponsors eventually were one part of me flipping the script on my life but I could no longer subscribe to that first step. As you suggest, Nir, everyone wanted me to focus on the product, but the core of my addiction was deep, dark pain and related conditions specific to me. Thanks for writing this piece, it's the clearest and best framework of addiction, yet.
